3DMARK's latest update gives gamers a new cross-platform ray tracing benchmark

3DMARK's latest benchmark is a ray tracing stress test for PCs and mobile devices

As part of a free update for their 3DMARK benchmarking suite, UL Benchmarks has released a new ray tracing stress test that is designed to allow users to compare Windows-powered PCs and high-end android devices using the Vulkan 1.1 API. This stress test is 3DMAR Solar Bay, and it is free for all owners of 3DMARK.

3DMARK Solar Bay has two components, a benchmarking component and a stress testing component. The benchmark is a test that is split into three sections, each of which is more demanding than the last. This benchmark is less demanding than 3DMARK's existing Port Royal and Speed Way ray tracing benchmarks, making Solar Bay a great benchmarking tool for mobile devices, laptops, and high-end PCs. The three stages of the benchmark also allows users to see how the ray tracing performance of their hardware scales. As with all benchmarks like this, the higher the framerate and higher the score, the better your device is.

3DMARK's Solar Bay stress test is a longer test that is designed to showcase how your hardware will perform over extended periods of time. The test runs for twenty minutes and shows users how the performance of their device varies over time. If your system starts to overheat or downclock itself to generate less heat or consume less power, this stress test will see and measure that. If you get a steady set of results, you can be confident that your device is not throttling its performance.

As mentioned before, 3DMARK Solar Bay is available for free to owners of 3DMARK. All gamers will need to utilise this benchmark is a device that supports Vulkan's ray tracing pipeline. This means that this benchmark will not work on all PCs or Android devices.
